[JAKARTA: An Indonesian woman slit the throat of her newborn baby out of shame for becoming pregnant outside marriage, a report has said.
The 29-year-old maid murdered the baby immediately after giving birth alone in the Jakarta shophouse where she worked, The Jakarta Globe reported.
Police said local residents heard the woman's screams as she was giving birth, but when they reached her, they found the mother and dead baby covered in blood.
The child's throat had been slit and its stomach slashed.
"It was an act to eliminate a pregnancy. Many people are afraid of the social consequences (of having a child out of wedlock) and criticism from family members and acquaintances," psychiatrist Andri was quoted as saying.
The woman was taken to hospital before being questioned by police. ]
